Abbie J. Chapman was born October 12, 1933. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA, and after graduating with a bachelor's degree, she married Robert A. Chapman. They moved to Corning in 1960 where Mr. Chapman taught and served in several administrative positions at Corning Community College. After raising a family, Abbie enrolled in the Nursing program and graduated in 1975. She worked with unwed mothers at the local BOCES for a year and then moved with her family to Middletown, CT, where she had a very successful 14-year career working with psychiatric patients. She served as both head nurse and nurse recruiter. Abbie was loved and respected by both the staff and her patients. She retired in 1991 and traveled extensively with her husband. They spent their winters in Tucson, AZ, where Abbie volunteered at Saguaro National Park for 10 years. She also enjoyed reading, knitting, hiking, and family gatherings. In addition to her husband, Abbie is survived by her four daughters, nine grandchildren, and a brother.
