Posted: Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Corning Community College unveiled the recently restored Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. portrait and the newly-established Library Bookplate Program on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 in the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library on the Spencer Hill campus in Corning, New York.

In 1960, Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. donated a 273-acre parcel of land outside the City of Corning for use as the future site of Corning Community College's Spencer Hill campus that today encompasses a complex of eight buildings plus an observatory and planetarium. The College has expanded its vision to provide services at a variety of off-campus sites throughout Steuben, Chemung and Schuyler counties. CCC is a member of the State University of New York, and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the National League for Nursing.

In 2009, the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Bookplate Program was created as a means to honor colleagues and friends, celebrate a special occasion, or remember a loved one. In recognition of gifts in the amount of $10,000 or more, a custom bookplate will be placed in a newly-purchased book annually. Books will then be
made available through the Library for review. Funds received through the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library Bookplate Program will support the Library endowment.

To date, two custom bookplates have been established for the late Dr. John "Jack" H. Martin and Mrs. Lorna J. Koegel. Dr. Martin was formally recognized in 2008 as the College's first faculty member, friend of Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., director of the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library from 1960-1972, and fellow bibliophile. Mrs. Koegel was formally recognized in 2008 as a friend of the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library and a strong supporter of Corning Community College.
