Corning Community College's Mathematics Department hosted Math Day 2009 on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the Spencer Hill campus. Math Day is an event focused on getting high school students excited about mathematics by exposing them to the careers and applications involving mathematics. Students spent the school day attending a variety of fun, informative and sometimes "out-of-this-world" presentations by mathematicians, scientists, and engineers from around the
region. They also engaged in some problem solving of their own. At the end of the day, awards were presented to winners of the math contest taken prior to the event. Almost 400 students from more than 20 local area high schools were in attendance.
Workshop sessions included Automobile Racing & Emissions Control by Kate Hughes, Corning Incorporated; Careers in Physics by Michael Billing, Cornell University; The Celestial Triangle & Legends of the Fall by Lawrence Josbeno, Corning Community College; An Engineer's Potpourri by Dr. Jay Sutherland, Corning Incorporated; The Joy of Sax by Dr. Robert Pompi, Binghamton University; Making Glass Stronger & More Useful by Dr. Suresh Gulati, Corning Incorporated; Meteorology Math by David Nicosia, National Weather Service Binghamton; Modular Mathematics by Murray Wright, Haverling High School; Nanotechnology by Daron Westly & Edward Camacho, Cornell University; Phun with Phibonacci by Sam McInroy, Corning Community College; Space, Time & Spacetime by Dr. Savitri Iyer, SUNY Geneseo; Trivia Challenge by Kate Danforth, Corning Community College; and What Are the Chances of That by Kim von Hagn, New York State Insurance Department.
