Midday Concert to Feature Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles

Corning Community College will host Midday Concerts during the spring 2010 semester. Join us for an hour of beautiful music with the Vocal and Instrumental Performing Ensembles on Thursday, March 18 at 12:30 p.m. in R004, Learning Center, Spencer Hill campus, Corning. In honor of St. Patrick's Day this pops concert will include Celtic Music and an Irish Step Dance. This performance features student soloists in addition to the CCC performing ensembles. Come enjoy the rich musical gifts of our students.

Walter S. Taylor Art Exhibit

Corning Community College will host an exhibit featuring drawings, paintings, and sculptures by Walter S. Taylor in the Atrium Gallery on the second floor of the Administration Building, Spencer Hill Campus, Corning, NY. The exhibit will begin on Friday, March 12, 2010, with an opening reception from 4 - 7 p.m. featuring a wine tasting by Bully Hill Winery. The exhibit will remain on display through April 9.

Smith Visiting Scholar Series will host Rebecca Penneys on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 8 p.m. in R003, R004, and R005 of the Learning Center on the Spencer Hill campus, as she presents, SNAPSHOT: Perspectives from Performer Pedagogue Rebecca Penneys. Remembering the Passenger Pigeon

Corning Community College faculty member David Higgins, associate professor of Art, has teamed with students Justin Clark and Barbara Lord to remember the fate of the Passenger Pigeon and a spectacular event that took place on May 5, 1875. The next time you drive past the Coopers Plains exit in Steuben County, play a little mental exercise. Imagine that the skies above you are so incredibly full of migrating birds, the now-extinct Passenger Pigeon, the flock blots out the sky and plunges the landscape into an eerie semidarkness. The cloud of two billion birds is a mile wide and 300 miles long, and takes three hours to pass. When they alight to roost, their combined weight splinters thick branches and topples small trees. The noise of their calls is shatteringly loud, like an army of locomotives in full throttle. Their droppings are so numerous that they fall like flakes in a January blizzard.

Kate Danforth Selected for Prestigious Award

Corning Community College is pleased to announce that Kate Danforth, professor of Mathematics, was recognized as the recipient of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Teaching Excellence Award on November 12, 2009 at the organization's annual conference in Las Vegas, NV. Danforth, one of six two-year college faculty from across the Nation to be honored with this award, is in her 32nd year at Corning Community College where she has accumulated numerous accolades including the CCC Trustees' Award for Excellence in Teaching and the State University of New York Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Faculty Service.

Sylvia Markson and the Magic Trunk

Corning Community College will host two additional fun-filled Cool Kids educational programs including comedy, live birds of prey, and our second annual ECOfest. Sylvia Markson and the Magic Trunk will be featured on Saturday, March 13, 2010, from 10 - 11 a.m., in the Main Dining Room, Commons Building, Spencer Hill campus, Corning. Sylvia will fascinate the audience with her Magic Trunk, inhabited by a delightful bunch of quick-witted puppets that she magically brings to life through ventriloquism. The young and young at heart will be treated to a show where they can believe that a puppet can truly talk. Sylvia will spend some time with the audience teaching and practicing ventriloquist techniques.

2010 Regional Job Fair

The 2010 Regional Job Fair will be held on Thursday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center located at 17 Aviation Drive, Horseheads, NY. The Job Fair will offer job seekers the opportunity to meet with the largest number of businesses of any such event in the community with more than 100 employers. Representatives will discuss employment opportunities and accept applications. In case of inclement weather, the Job Fair will be rescheduled for Thursday, March 25.

Cynthia Emmer Tapped for Additional Term as CCC Trustee

Corning Community College's Regional Board of Trustees recently welcomed former trustee Cynthia Emmer, Elmira, NY, to an additional term effective May 2009 as a Governor's appointment from Chemung County. She will serve for a term to expire June 30, 2016. Emmer is a retired fiscal officer from Broome Developmental Center. As a community activist, she is chair of the Chemung County Democratic Committee and vice-chair of the Elmira Housing Authority.

Nicole Conover Named NJCAA All-American

Corning Community College is pleased to announce that freshman setter Nicole Conover of Horseheads, NY, has been selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 1st Team All-American team. Conover becomes the first Red Baron volleyball player to earn 1st Team All-American honors in her freshman campaign and only the fourth All-American in program history.

CCC Welcomes Four to Regional Board of Trustees

Corning Community College's Regional Board of Trustees recently welcomed four new members including Kenneth Austin, Julie A. Gorman, Robert Morin, and Timothy Rosell. The Regional Board of Trustees is comprised of fourteen residents from the tri-county region which includes Chemung, Steuben, and Schuyler. Trustees are volunteers that are appointed by their respective Legislatures or by the New York State Governor. Terms of service vary in length and can be reappointed for extended terms.

To be eligible for President's List, students must have a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher, 12 or more non-repeat hours of earned credit, no grade lower than C, and no incomplete grades. Bartholomew Inks Scholarship at St. Edward's University

Corning Community College basketball standout, and Louisiana native, Rodney Bartholomew officially inked a full basketball scholarship commitment to St. Edward's University in Austin, TX, on November 18, 2009, in the presence of his parents who traveled from Louisiana for the special occasion. St. Edward's University is a Division II National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institution that competes in the Heartland Conference. The Hilltoppers won the conference crown in 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005; earning an NCAA Tournament bid in 2008, 2007, and 2006.

Stemski's Establish Scholarship and Child Care Fund

Stemski of Painted Post, NY, donated significant resources to establish two separate funds accessible to CCC students beginning in the fall 2010 semester. Both Mr. and Mrs. Stemski are Corning, NY, natives who were born, raised, and educated in the Southern Tier. They are proud parents to three daughters, Nancy, Suzanne, and Carol, who each attended Corning Community College.
