CCC Ranked Amongst America's Best Community Colleges

On August 23, 2010, Corning Community College in Corning, NY, was named amongst America's best community colleges by Washington Monthly. The ranking is utilizes Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) results and graduation rates published by the United States Department of Education. A similar ranking was completed by Washington Monthly in 2007. The study highlights active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, support for learning, and four-year graduation rates. Washington Monthly states, "... selectivity does not equal excellence, money isn't everything, and making it harder will result in more graduating."

Free Successful Business Seminar

Corning Community College's Small Business Development Center is partnering with the Small Business Administration and Southern Tier Economic Growth to offer a free seminar, How to Start a Successful Business, on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 68 p.m. at Chemung County Chamber of Commerce Building, 400 East Church Street, Elmira, NY. Sherri Arnold, director of CCC's Small Business Development Center, and Brian Qualey, branch manager of the Small Business Administration, will discuss the necessary legal requirements to starting a business, deciding on a legal structure, locating market research, and securing funding startup.

Eileen Collins Observatory to Host Kids' Night

Corning Community College's Eileen Collins Observatory and the Elmira-Corning Astronomical Society will co-host, Kids' Night, on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 7-10 p.m. on the Spencer Hill Campus, Corning, NY. Activities will include astronomical crafts, planetarium shows, observing through our telescopes, comet demonstrations, facility tours, and many other enjoyable things to do. This event is fun for kids of all ages.

Corning Community College will host motivational speaker Terry Lynch as he presents, Mistakes Happen: A Historical Guide to Overcoming Adversity, on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, from 12-1 p.m. in the Triangle Lounge, Commons Building, Spencer Hill Campus, Corning, NY. Lynch has 20 years experience as a professional actor. He was trained at, among others, Northern Illinois University, Second City Training Center, and Improv Olympic. Lynch has performed at a number of theaters in the Chicago area in addition to radio and television programs.

Emma E. Donegan Scholarship

Corning Community College Development Foundation, Inc. proudly announces the Emma E. Donegan Scholarship established by her loving granddaughter, Laura A. (Hall) Plank '90, Kensington, MD, in honor of Emma's inspiration of women and community commitment. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide two $2,500 annual scholarships for new or continuing Corning Community College students enrolled on a full-time (at least 12 credits) basis from the Corning-Painted Post School District with preference provided to graduates of Corning-Painted Post East High School. The Fund shall be used to provide scholarships for books, supplies, and other educational expenses related to attending Corning Community College.

Intercollegiate Bowling Program Reinstated

The Corning Community College Athletics Department announced that intercollegiate bowling teams will be reinstated beginning with a full fall 2010 schedule. CCC has a rich history in bowling including outstanding campaigns in the mid-80s. In 1986, Lynn Farr was a two-time All-American and named the National Tournament MVP. In 2004, Ryan Shafer, current Professional Bowling Association member and CCC alum, was selected as an All-American and inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Hall of Fame. Longtime CCC bowling coach and retired professor, Beverly Beebe, was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2001.

Nicholas Young Welcomed to Regional Board of Trustees

On June 1, 2010, Corning Community College's Regional Board of Trustees welcomed Nicholas Young of Elmira, NY, as the 2010-2011 student trustee. Young is a 25-year native of the Elmira area where he attended Elmira Free Academy. He decided to pursue an Accounting degree at Corning Community College after his supervisory position and employer were eliminated. Having experience with internal quality control oversight and monthly statistical data collection, Young began his educational pursuit in summer 2009 at the Academic and Workforce Development Center in Elmira, NY. His expected degree completion date is May 2011 at which point he plans to pursue a four-year degree. Young is president of the Accounting and Business Society and serves as a tutor for students enrolled in introductory accounting courses. Young's appointment will end on June 30, 2011.

Corning Community College Development Foundation, Inc. proudly announces the Thomas and Barbara Blumer Early Childhood Education Scholarship established by Thomas E. and Barbara H. Blumer, Corning, NY. The purpose of the Fund is to provide one annual scholarship for a new or continuing Corning Community College student presently serving in or intending to secure a career in the child care profession who is enrolled in an early childhood development program on a full-time (at least 12 credits) basis from Chemung, Schuyler, or Steuben Counties. Individuals must demonstrate evidence of good character, remain in good academic standing, and exhibit a strong desire for education. Reunion 2010 Weekend

The Corning Community College Alumni Association will host Reunion 2010 on Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 12, 2010. This year's event will honor classes ending with "0" or "5" although we welcome all alumni and friends. A special invitation is being extended to our honored class of 1960; CCC's first graduating class, who will be celebrating their 50-year reunion. Gatherings will be offered for affinity groups including student athletes and student leadership participants.

Nicole Conover Named NJCAA All-American
